How she came to be...

I made another attempt at moving away from the usual bear softie and ended up making a doll. I thought it might be interesting to show the process that was involved and then the end product.

This is a signature doll made by some dear person and given to us when Jack went to hospital last. The purpose is to get visitors and nurses to sign it. It was a bit of a traumatic time (to say the least) and we didn't get any signatures. I found it at the back of his cupboard yesterday and the shape got me thinking.

So from here I did a sketch of how I thought it might turn out (you can only hope!) and then made a larger sketch of the pattern.

Then the pattern is then traced onto plastic, cut out and labeled. Obviously the next bit is the cutting and sewing and lots of hoping that it will turn out somewhat similar to the original picture.

The funniest thing was Harry's reaction. He tried to pull the hair off, told me it looked stupid and that "we are not selling that doll". I asked him what was the main problem and he said definitely the hair. He would be happy to sell it with no hair (we are selling things at a stall together for his school's Mega Fun Fair in Sept). I'm not really keen on the no hair idea, so a compromise is that I will look into different styles and get back to him. Can you believe HE IS JUST SIX???

Here is doll just hanging out with bunny.

Edit: Thanks for the kind "hair comments". I will have to show Harry when he gets home from school! I have put up doll for sale in the shop and if there are no takers she WILL be on the stall in Sept no matter what Harry says. I have to remember I AM THE MUM!

I very much like the hair solution. I can see that as a six-year-old he'd prefer the conventional yarn/string/fur hair, though. Thanks for sharing the process. I'd wait with doing the plastic bit until the doll was assembled and turned out as desired.
It's great that Harry cares what he's asked to sell and stand behind!
